CaseCentral’s Latest Software Release Provides New Measurability, Integration, Cost and Performance Advancements for eDiscovery

Cloud Computing powers new release that includes advanced eDiscovery process analytics for measurability, integrated review software capabilities, expanded concept search and dashboard functionality, enhanced performance and ease- of-use

SAN FRANCISCO — February 2, 2009 —CaseCentral, the leader in secure, on-demand eDiscovery software for corporate counsel and law firms looking to simplify and take control of eDiscovery, today announced the fourth release (R4) of the CaseCentral eDiscovery review platform. The added capabilities of this release, developed in partnership with CaseCentral’s AmLaw 100 and Fortune 100 clients and alliance partners, represents the next evolution of eDiscovery and signals the emergence of a new kind of software platform that brings together data, content management, process analytics, search and visualization to increase eDiscovery ease-of-use and efficiency, while reducing risk and cost. Cloud computing powers the new release, which is the first single and multi-matter eDiscovery review platform to integrate analysis, first-pass review, four corners review and production in a single application. CaseCentral R4 also expands measurable process analytics and includes new features and performance enhancements designed to meet the needs of budget-constrained legal departments facing an expected increase in litigation.

“As 2009 begins, companies are facing budget restrictions, while seeing an increasing amount of litigation,” said Tom Thimot, president and CEO of CaseCentral. “CaseCentral’s Cloud Computing-based eDiscovery software changes the playing field by enabling customers to deploy quickly, providing the only integrated  application for analysis, first-pass review, four corners review and production and delivering industry-first process measurability.”

eDiscovery Evolution: Unique Process Analytics and Dashboard Deliver Measurability

Corporations and law firms alike are faced with the economic imperative to improve eDiscovery processes. The first phase of improvement entails moving from an event-based approach to a process-based approach. Further enhancement requires overall process improvement, however, it is nearly impossible to sustainably improve a process that cannot be measured.

In 2008 CaseCentral introduced the industry’s first process analytics, enabling authorized users to receive real-time, quantitative measurement of key eDiscovery process points, providing critical insight into eDiscovery costs, trends and efficiencies. This information is vital for corporate legal and law firms alike to measure cost (per document, per matter, per law firm), efficiency (review time) and effectiveness (review quality) across one or multiple matters. Subsequently, this capability enables quantitative eDiscovery measurement for resource governance, risk and cost oversight, as well as managing matter timelines and production deadlines.

With CaseCentral R4, the process analytics and real-time Enterprise eDiscovery Dashboard have been enhanced to include:

  • Dynamic drilldown from summary firm and case-level metrics to detailed individual metrics on a specific phase of review or reviewer;
  • Insight into costs, trends and efficiencies. This information is critical for firm or resource selection, budgeting and early case assessment;
  • Measurability and metrics for one case or across all matters;
  • Measurement of efficiency (review time), effectiveness (review quality) and cost (per document, per case, per law firm) across one or multiple cases and law firms down to the reviewer level, including actual vs. estimated.

Consolidated Analysis, First Pass Review, Four Corners Review and Production

CaseCentral is the first single matter and multi-matter, multi-party eDiscovery review software to integrate eDiscovery analysis, first-pass review and four corners review in a single software application, eliminating the need to transport data to additional systems for further review and eventual production, thereby decreasing risk, time and cost. Unlike other products that consider first-pass review and bulk tagging equivalent to four corners review, CaseCentral recognizes the differences between first-pass review for the quick analysis and reduction of document content versus subsequent four corners review where attorneys evaluate actual document content for coding and potential production.

CaseCentral’s first pass review takes advantage of  faceted classification tools that cluster like documents together to help reviewers visually analyze data sets and make faster and more accurate document decisions. Other eDiscovery applications have limits of 5-10,000 documents (1/4 to 1/2 GB) for clustering and visualization, however CaseCentral has no limit to the number of documents that can be included. Attorneys quickly gain a high-level understanding of a document collection's main concepts and can easily tag documents or bulk tag entire document clusters for responsiveness, privilege, confidentiality or any user-defined designation.

Once the subset is defined, four corners review is performed document-to-document within the same application, eliminating the need to transport the data to a second system for further review and eventual production. Users can take full advantage of CaseCentral’s vast collaborative features, flexible review functionality and reporting metrics as well as a new simple to use grid interface and TIFF on Demand.  As documents are designated, reviewers can again take advantage of near-duplication, advanced email threading and faceted classification to speed review and ensure consistent document handling – even comparing related-document tags dynamically to identify documents that may be produced in one version and withheld in another.

This new functionality is available for both the single matter in the CaseCentral™ review platform, and for multiple matters and multiple parties in the CaseCentral Enterprise™ review platform.

CaseCentral and CaseCentral Enterprise R4 functionality includes:

  • Ease of use –
    • Grid view – Reviewers can intuitively display documents in an easy grid view, simplifying common tasks and providing powerful filtering and sort capabilities.
    • Bubble preview™ – Users have an instant preview of document content without having to open or review the entire document.
    • Advanced spreadsheet support – Optimizes support for users needing to review complicated financial documents.
    • TIFF on demand – Users may dynamically create TIFF images of native files.  Simplifies redaction and production-preparation by putting functionality in user hands.
  • Advanced Review Functionality – Using the integrated platform, users quickly review documents or document clusters, performing all phases of review within a single application for one or more matters. Manage all matters efficiently from a single interface, re-using workflow, security and work product.
    • Concept search and Visualization Clusters – Expand on keyword searches by finding related concepts. Feature is fully integrated with keyword, Boolean, stemming, synonym, proximity and all other search features to powerfully simplify use and empower analysis and first pass review. The concept searching interface, aided with Concept Visualization Clusters, ensures that your search results in increased coverage, minimizing risk.
    • Faceted classification - Introduces a simple interface to quickly tag, delete, copy or move documents, document clusters, near duplicates, email threads within a case or across cases, based on content or metadata.
    • Early case assessment - By analyzing data sets and/or prior matters users gain a first glimpse into data prior to active litigation.
  • Enhanced file type support - With new support of more than 400 unique file types, CaseCentral continues to ensure that users can review documents in any format desired.
  • Performance improvements -
    • Processing - Review can begin the day the data is received.  Processing exceeds multiple Terabytes per month for clients and includes culling, index and search, de-duplication and near duplication.
    • Application - Critical document navigation tasks have sped up by 75-100%, enabling reviewers to more efficiently review and code assigned documents.
    • Production – Industry-leading capacity to produce 500K documents a day, per client.
  • Unicode / Language support – Support for Unicode and double byte character document review.

eDiscovery in the Cloud

CaseCentral is the only cloud computing-based eDiscovery review software application on the market today. This architecture uniquely supports the virtual teams that are typical in eDiscovery review – corporate legal, potentially located in multiple states and time zones, law firms, doing review work outside the corporate firewall and often outside review houses or LPOs, performing critical review from locations across the country and even from other countries. Cloud computing delivers these benefits with centralized data management and enterprise-class security, ultimately reducing the risks typically borne by corporations when they transmit proprietary and confidential data outside the firewall to multiple law firms and service providers.

Cloud computing architectures drastically reduce application deployment time, delivering “instant on” availability for new matters. And initial cloud computing deployment and on-going maintenance costs are much less than traditional on-premise software deployments.

A recent Gartner, Inc. report, “Get Ready for Content in the Cloud,” published December 12, 2008, states “Content in the cloud will result when new delivery models enable enterprises to share content much faster and more broadly than on-premises packaged software has allowed with its complicated architectures, access controls and client software deployment.”1

"The most important thing happening today is that platforms are moving off premise and into the cloud," said Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO, salesforce.com. "Cloud computing offers almost unlimited computing power and collaboration at a massive scale.”

CaseCentral’s on-demand delivery model means rapid implementation and time to value with no additional capital or maintenance expenditures.

  • Document Preservation and Collection is simplified because only new evidence needs to be added to the review process. Collect and preserve once, use over and over again.
  • Document Processing is industry-leading, enabling documents to be culled, de-duped and near-duped in ways that significantly lower the volume of documents that need to be reviewed by as much as 70 percent.
  • Document Review and Analysis is powered by a sophisticated, state-of-the-art workflow engine based on more than 14 years of experience and collaboration with leading litigators. Reviewer efficiency can be increased by up to 300 percent, enabling reviewers that once averaged 500 documents/per day to review thousands.
  • Production time is slashed, enabling worry-free meeting of eDiscovery deadlines, and dramatically reducing the risk of court imposed fines or sanctions, or damaged relationships with regulators.

CaseCentral’s Professional Services Group (PSG) has supported more than 10,000 client matters, encompassing more than 500 TBs of customer data. CaseCentral’s service approach ensures uninterrupted project management and technical support throughout the lifecycle of every matter, providing clients direct access to project management personnel intimately familiar with their matters at all times.
